Green Hydrogen genesis

The world emerged from the Covid pandemic at the end of 2020 with a will to change the energy landscape. Exit the good old oil & gas and welcome to the then called “fuel of the future” Green Hydrogen.

At the time, interest rates were at their lowest and massive amounts of public money were to be invested in order to boost the economy. Green Hydrogen was a gold opportunity and received loads of financing. On paper, Hydrogen was seen as a fuel but also as a mean to decarbonize through its combination with CO2. The Netherlands’ independent green fuel company, SwitcH2, and the independent floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel engineer and operator, BW Offshore, are considering developing the SwitcH2 NH3 OFFSET FPSO Green Ammonia, a green ammonia floating production unit.

The Dutch government plans to reduce by 2030 its carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 45% compared to 1990 and should be carbon neutral by 2050.
After the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Europe decided to boost its energy dependency through its RePowerEU.
In 2022, the Netherlands have an installed wind power capacity above 8 gigawatts (GW), with 29.6% based offshore.
